Use this letter to tell a bailiff you need an additional 14 days to seek debt advice before they visit your property. Usually the bailiff should give you a minimum period of 14 clear days after they serve a Notice of Enforcement on you, before they visit your property. This letter requests a minimum notice period of 28 clear days.

You can choose to send a letter in your own name or in joint names if you have a debt in joint names.

I am writing to ask that you increase the minimum period of notice to 28 clear days before you may attend my property. This will allow me the additional time I require to seek debt advice.

Please consider point 5.12 of The Taking Control of Goods (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2026 – Explanatory Memorandum, where the Ministry of Justice explain that they ‘would expect Enforcement Agents to accept requests for extensions from individuals who report that it is needed to obtain debt advice.’
