Welcome to the MP Constituency Hub
We know that being in debt can be hard to deal with, and that people may turn to their MP for support. At National Debtline, we're here to help. This hub is for MPs, caseworkers and researchers to give you information and advice to help constituents in financial difficulty, including referring them for free debt advice from National Debtline. The hub also contains information to help you raise debt issues in Parliament.
Who are we? We are National Debtline.
We're a registered charity providing free, impartial, expert debt advice to more than 100,000 people each year. We've been helping people manage their debts for over 30 years. We are independent and trusted - we're proud to be part of Money Advice Trust, alongside Business Debtline, and were named Debt Advice Provider of the Year 2024. For more information, please contact us at policy@moneyadvicetrust.org.
Share our details with your constituents
Your constituents can contact us by phone, webchat and online to receive free debt advice. The phone number below is a dedicated number for people who have heard about our free debt advice service from their MP. It is different from our usual telephone number but will still take your constituent through to one of our expert debt advisers.

Preparing your constituents for debt advice

We know talking about debt isn't easy and that constituents may come to you for help with debt issues. As well as using our online information and advice to support them, you can refer them to National Debtline. Our expert advisers will provide support across all their debts, and help them make a tailored plan for dealing with them. Here are some steps you can take to help facilitate the conversation about debt, and encourage your constituent to contact us:

Introduce

Identify where free debt advice may be needed and introduce National Debtline to your constituent as a registered charity providing free, impartial debt advice.

Prepare

Encourage your constituent to open all their letters and gather up-to-date information on their income and spending - wage slips, bank and benefits statements and utility bills.

Contact

Suggest your constituent reaches out to National Debtline through phone, webchat or My Money Steps (our digital advice tool) for help with budgeting or managing their debts.

Our campaigns

As well as working with MPs and their teams to help people in debt directly, we are a leading voice in campaigning for positive change. We work with those in Parliament, Government and regulators to tackle and prevent financial difficulty.

Bailiff regulation

We're calling on the Government to give the Enforcement Conduct Board statutory powers so it can deliver effective, independent regulation of the bailiff industry and ensure that people who have their debts passed to bailiffs are treated fairly.

Help to Repay

We're campaigning for an energy debt Help to Repay scheme - offering repayment matching and limited debt write-off to help people struggling to repay energy debt.

Safe routes out of debt

We're calling for improvements to the insolvency system to ensure it better fits the current context for household finances, incomes and employment.

Stop the Knock

We've collected data on the collection practices of councils across England and Wales, and are calling for reform of council tax collection regulations to better support people struggling to pay.
